100% Nebbiolo
Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy
____
The Villero vineyard faces south/south-west in the village of Castiglione Falletto, covering an area of little more than one hectare. The vines are 39 years on average, and are planted at a density of 4000 per hectare. The 2006 vintage was harvested on September 29th and yielded around 30 hectoliters of wine per hectare. After an alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks lasting 20 days at a temperature of between 28 and 32 degrees Centigrade, the wine macerated on the skins for a total of 10 days. It was then transferred immediately into small barrels for the malolactic fermentation, following which it spent its further period of ageing in 30 hectoliter oak casks. It was bottled without filtration on September 1st, 2009. In the 2006 vintage 3506 standard bottles, 100 magnums, 5 double magnums.
Elegance and power come together in a grand style in Vietti’s 2006 Barolo Riserva Villero. At times delicate while at other times a powerhouse, the 2006 captures all the seeming contradictions that make Nebbiolo such a great grape. Tasted alongside the other Vietti 2006s, the Villero shines. The aromas and flavors are all beautifully defined, but it is the wine’s overall sense of harmony that leaves the longest impression. Tar, pine and wild flowers are layered into the huge, balsamic-infused finish.
